What is Anxiety?

The dictionary definition of Anxiety is “a state of chronic apprehension”.  When you experience anxiety you may find it difficult to specify what you are anxious about, but you may well feel detached from yourself and even fearful of dying or going crazy.

Anxiety can appear in different forms and have different levels of intensity, from a twinge of unease to full blown panic attacks.  The most important thing to remember is that even in a full blown panic attack, where you may experience shortness of breath, heart palpitations and  a number of other physical manifestations that are very unpleasant, this is not life threatening and you are not going mad.

I work a with a lot of anxious clients and find that the most effective treatment starts with teaching relaxation techniques.  I then help clients to understand the triggers for their anxiety and help to change the negative self-talk that perpetuates a state of apprehension and worry.

In order to help yourself I would suggest beginning with a relaxation tape and spending 20 minutes every day learning how to relax, in a calm environment away from the pressures of the day.  Sometimes this will be sufficient to reduce your levels of anxiety considerably.  If however this is not effective on its own then counselling may well help to tackle the underlying causes.
