We all get angry from time to time in our lives, but it is how we express that anger that defines whether on not we have a problem with it. The five categories of angry behaviour to avoid are:- · Holding anger in - when you hold in your anger you let it control you. Because so much of your energy will be expended trying not to confront the anger you will have less energy for more pleasurable activities · Escalating Anger This can happen when we have negative thoughts that fuel our anger, just allowing it to get completely out of proportion · Displacing Anger This is when you direct your anger at someone who has nothing to do with you being angry · Responding Aggressively When your response ends in physical aggression · Using drugs or Alcohol These may be used to help you calm down but do not remove the source of the anger. Using drugs or alcohol to relieve anger causes many, many more problems than it solves. When anger gets the better of us our body becomes extremely tense and this in turn will affect our health.
In order to resolve problems with anger I work with clients to understand the underlying issues that make them angry and then over a period of several weeks start to help them to recognize the signs of anger, discover the underlying emotions and work with unhelpful beliefs and thought patterns to channel anger in a positive way. |
